This Moment in Time

As we reckon with the murder, oppression, erasure, and degradation of Black people that has pervaded our society for generations, we begin by examining our own role in upholding and perpetuating systems and structures of power and injustice. We stand firmly in solidarity with our Black colleagues, leaders, educators, and students against the hatred and violence we see today, while recognizing that we have so much more work to do as an organization.

We acknowledge the tremendous responsibility we have to raise up the voices of Black leaders and leaders of color in designing and developing anti-racist educational spaces that truly reflect and respond to community needs. We are committed to living up to this responsibility.

Specifically:

We commit to fostering safe and inclusive training environments that value individual experiences, spark healthy debate, and invite fresh perspective.

We commit to auditing and adjusting our systems and practices – from recruitment to school design, from coaching approach to text selection – to make them more equitable, inclusive, and uplifting.

We commit to diversifying our staff, our leadership, and our Board to include the voices of Black leaders and leaders of color, so decisions are being made by individuals from communities who are impacted most directly by our work.

Over the last 18 months, we have been reflecting, learning, and growing as a team to make this organization more equitable, inclusive, and diverse. We know now that this isn’t enough. Today, we commit to becoming an actively, vocally, and unequivocally anti-racist organization that does not rest until every single Black child in America has access to a transformative education that uplifts and celebrates their identity and prepares them for a lifetime of opportunity.

As we continue to navigate our responsibility to our leaders, to the educational landscape, and to this nation, we want your input.

It is easy to feel powerless in the face of such entrenched and widespread injustice. The actions and advocacy of BES leaders and their students through this difficult time inspires tremendous hope in us. We commit to becoming an organization that inspires the same in them and in our partners.

Thank you for your continued support and belief in BES.

Sincerely,

Aasimah Navlakhi
