Meet Our BES Fellows

Bronté Johnson

2023-2024 BES Fellow

Build Track

Atlanta, Georgia

Bronté Johnson is a graduate of Spelman College, having earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 2014. While at Spelman, she had the opportunity to volunteer as a mentor in Atlanta Public Schools. Since then, she has dedicated her entire professional career to education, which began as a Teach for America (TFA) Corps Member after graduating from Spelman.

During her TFA tenure, Bronté taught 7th grade social studies in Memphis, Tennessee before moving to New York City to teach kindergarten and first grade at the Harlem Link Charter School. She was later tapped by TFA to become a Mentor Teacher as part of their 2017 Summer Institute for incoming corps members in the NYC area. In this role, Bronté played a key part in training and developing corps members on the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to become teachers who lead students to meaningful outcomes in academic and personal growth.

For five years, Bronté held a number of positions at the Excellence Girls Elementary and Middle Academies, located in Brooklyn, New York and part of the Uncommon Schools Charter Network. She most recently served as the Excellence Girls Elementary Academy’s principal following the successful completion of a one year principal fellowship program. Bronté was elevated to this leadership role after serving as dean of students and families, campus diversity facilitator, grade level leader, and 7th/8th grade history teacher. These experiences allowed her to hone her instructional expertise and grow in her mastery of school operations. She also gained valuable experience in the areas of management and mentorship by learning how to work alongside her leadership team, instructional leaders, and teachers to build a joyful and rigorous school culture, while simultaneously fostering consistency in academic and behavioral expectations.

She recently moved back to the Atlanta area, where her husband and family are from, and began teaching 3rd grade at KIPP WAYS Primary Charter School in September 2022. As a Community Co-Design Fellow with BES, Bronté is proposing a new Atlanta charter school. “I have had the opportunity to see schools thriving at their best, and schools drowning at their worst. A school at its best serves not only the whole child, but the entire community as well. I have seen and come to understand the positive impact we can achieve when every stakeholder within our schools, neighborhoods, and communities has a seat at the table. It results in increased investment, collaboration, accountability, and success for our scholars.”

In addition to her Bachelor’s degree from Spelman College, Bronté holds a Master of Science in Teaching from Fordham University and later completed the National Principals Academy Fellowship at the Relay Graduate School of Education.
